Knowing the patient as a species: anatomy, physiology, behavior… An ACV must have knowledge about the animal as a whole in order to be able to detect possible clinical signs of disease, behavioral changes, etc. It is necessary to know the clinical examination techniques, to be accustomed to the drugs that are most frequently used in each species, to know the vaccination and deworming protocols, to have basic notions of nutrition… Many aspects influence he alth and disease, as well that the more knowledge we have, the more we can help patients.
  3. Getting around the clinical consultation: to be able to participate in the consultation, it is necessary for the LCA to know the basic material used, as well as knowing how to carry out a good physical examination of the animal (examination of mucous membranes, auscultation, palpation of lymph nodes, assessing body condition and hydration status, taking temperature,…). In addition, it is important to know how to hold the animal correctly and to have notions of first aid in order to be able to react to emergency situations.
  4. Collection and analysis of biological samples: in day-to-day clinical practice it is common to have to obtain different biological samples, store them correctly and process them: blood, urine, feces, hair… LCAs play an important role in this area, correctly using and maintaining laboratory equipment, preparing samples for viewing under a microscope or analysis, performing rapid tests, etc.
  5. Support in the operating room: before, during and after any intervention, the veterinarian needs the assistance of a veterinary clinical assistant, for What is essential is that he knows the different support tasks in the operating room, such as asepsis and disinfection protocols, preparing the patient for surgery, sterilization of surgical material, knowing how to act in the event of an anesthetic or surgical complication, cleaning and dressing of wounds, etc.
