The Australian Green Tree Frog is also known as the White's Tree Frog or the Stocky Tree Frog although its scientific name is Litoria caerulea. It is native to Australia and New Guinea although it has subsequently been introduced to New Zealand and the United States.
Physical Appearance of the Green Tree Frog
It is a large specimen and can reach 10 centimeters in lengthThe color of its skin is a striking green color, although this can turn brown if the tree frog decides to move on the ground, in this way it would better camouflage itself with the environment. Sometimes it shows white spots on the body.
Its belly is whitish and we can see golden eyes crossed by a black horizontal line. Thanks to this tool in his eyes, his night vision improves remarkably. It has the classic membranes on its legs like any frog, a factor that makes it comfortable to climb trees.
In captivity the green tree frog can live up to 16 years, a much higher average than other species of frogs that usually have a much shorter longevity.
Behaviour
The green tree frog is an extremely docile which makes them widely accepted as pets and companion animals. Of course, we must know that it is an animal protected by the destruction of its habitat, for this reason we should never take a wild frog, for this it is better to go to approved breeders or shelters.
This is a nocturnal animal that takes advantage of the darkness to hunt. We can find it in the trees near small lakes or in swamps or cool and humid meadows. We can even find them in a toilet!
It is during the night that he makes a call to communicate with his entourage and with other members of his community. There is still a study on their call and its meaning because they do not always do it to attract their partners: they also alert each other to danger, for example.
Green Tree Frog Feeding
Generally feeds on insects and spiders although its diet can include small frogs and even small mammals, an adaptation to all kinds of resources. It uses its tongue and its little hands to consume the food.
The main predators of the green tree frog are snakes such as cobras, lizards and various birds.
Care
As it is such a docile frog, many people consider it to be an excellent pet since it rarely bites. Even so, it is important to highlight that we must wash our hands whenever we handle it.
As basic elements we must have a terrarium with controlled temperature and humidity and food. If we comply with all of this, we can enjoy a he althy frog, since they are animals that are very resistant to change.
Green Tree Frog He alth Issues
The main he alth problem that green tree frogs suffer from is obesity, as they tend to suffer from this problem if we overfeed them. In addition, not exercising to look for prey is another factor that aggravates obesity.
