The result was a dog that exhibited physical characteristics of both breeds, as well as combined personality traits.
The eurasier is a large dog that stands out for its robust and adorable appearance at the same time, since its leafy coat and sweet expression make it a truly beautiful dog. Do you want to know more about this dog breed? Keep reading and discover in this article all about the Eurasier dog, its characteristics, care and much more.
Origin of the eurasier
In the early 1960s, breeder Julius Wipfel began making a series of crosses between dogs of two breeds, the chow chow and the wolfspitz, in order to create a new breed of dog that would combine the characteristics of both dogs. The result was the eurasier, a dog obtained by adding Samoyeds to the previous mixture. This particular breed was officially recognized by the FCI in 1973.
The creation of the eurasier breed was not easy at all, since the assistance of scientists specialized in canine genetics was needed to put an end to the problems associated with the original crosses. All this has been rigorously documented thanks to the fact that multiple books have been written about its origins and the obstacles faced in its creation.
Characteristics of the eurasier
The eurasier standard establishes that it is a dog of large breed, weighing between 23 and 32 kilograms and a height at the withers of between 52 and 60 centimeters in the case of males, and a weight of 18 to 26 kilograms and a height of between 48 and 56 centimeters in that of females.
The body of the eurasier is elongated, with a solid and proportionate skeleton. Among the characteristics of the eurasier, it stands out that has typical features of the Samoyeds, such as its face, which is elongated and has powerful teeth. The tail is long and covered with long, very dense hair and is often tucked into the back, especially when in motion.
The head is wedge or triangle shaped, with a sharp snout and a shallow stop. The eyes are medium and usually dark, while the ears, which are also medium in size, are triangular and stand erect, ending in a rounded point. A peculiarity of the Eurasian breed is that some specimens have a blue tongue, recalling that they come from the Chow Chow.
The hair of the eurasier is medium long, varying in length in the different regions of the body. Thus, it is shorter in the front part of its legs and in the face, but considerably longer in the tail, neck, belly and the back part of the legs. In addition, it has a woolly undercoat that insulates it from the cold. As for colors of the eurasier, practically all are accepted, except liver, pure white or white spots.
Eurasier puppy
The Eurasian puppy also reminds us of the Samoyed puppy. The main difference lies in the colors, since the Eurasian cannot be white, and the upright ears that this breed has. Likewise, this is a really adorable puppy, with rounded shapes and a bear-like appearance due to its coat. In fact, the eurasier is part of the list of dogs that look like bears.
Eurasier character
If something characterizes a Eurasier it is that he is tremendously adorable, because his personality is captivating, since it is a dog affectionate, balanced, calm and really sociableLikewise, this is a perfect dog breed for a family with children, since the Eurasian loves company, games and being the center of attention. In fact, another characteristic of the Eurasian character is that he does not tolerate loneliness well.
On the other hand, and although it is a sociable dog, it is common for it to be cautious or fearful on first contact with strangers. For this reason, it is important to make the approach little by little, very carefully and respecting the dog's timing at all times.
As we said, the eurasier is a very playful dog, so much so that he can be quite mischievous during his puppy stage. Also, due to the Eurasier's temperament, if he gets bored or doesn't receive adequate mental and physical stimulation, he can become a destructive dog.
Eurasier care
The eurasier dog is one of the cleanest spitz and has less body odour. In any case, we must not neglect his coat which, being long and dense, must be brushed regularly, it being best to brush once a day. The baths, on the other hand, must be done when necessary, not exceeding in this aspect.
Although the above care is relevant, the most important care of the Eurasier dog is the care it requires in terms of company and social contact. As we said in the previous section, it is an extremely sensitive dog that cannot bear to be aloneSo much so, that he can become sullen, depressed or destructive as a result of spending many hours alone. In addition, it does not usually stand being tied for a long time, so it is also advisable to walk it in areas where it can enjoy its freedom, run and play with other dogs.
In addition, it is highly advisable to offer the Eurasian different toys and intelligence games to keep him stimulated at home. Likewise, playing with him indoors is an excellent option.
Eurasier education
As good as the eurasian but, he has the peculiarity of being really stubborn and independent, so he tends to obey only to the person who considers the guide and referent of him. In addition, it should be noted that training him requires a large dose of patience and a lot of perseverance, because if we relax all our work can be lost in a few seconds. Of course, we must never resort to violence of any kind, the correct and adequate thing is to base the sessions and exercises on positive and respectful training techniques with the animal.
The above characteristics are explained by a phenomenon called neoteny, which refers to a heterochrony or change in rhythm and organ functioning, which causes your body to mature very late. Due to this phenomenon, this is a very independent, hierarchical and very little barking dog, so we do not have to worry about it being noisy.
On the other hand, it is advisable that all members of the household participate in his education in order to ensure that the eurasier obeys them all equally. As soon as the dog arrives at home, it is recommended to start his education through socialization, since, let us remember, it is a dog that is usually reserved with strangers. Little by little, we will introduce the basic rules of coexistence, the most basic orders and, over time, we will add tricks and more advanced orders. Of course, we must not forget to teach the eurasier where to relieve himself
He alth of the eurasier
Despite the fact that in the first moments after the emergence of the breed it suffered from serious congenital conditions, the result of inbred crosses for the most part, the current breed is much he althier and more robust. Even so, these animals have a number of conditions to which they are more prone than other breeds, as we will see below.
Something that seems to affect the Eurasiers are the rheumatological pathologies, that is, those that affect the joints, with a great tendency, compared to other breeds with similar characteristics, to develop this type of disease. One of them is the well-known hip dysplasia, which cannot be completely avoided but has a better prognosis and evolution if diagnosed early. They also often suffer from patella and elbow dislocations. Other diseases of Eurasier dogs are hypothyroidism, which affects the functioning of the thyroid gland, and eye conditions, both entropion and ectropion.
In order for all these pathologies to be as unproblematic as possible, it is best to visit the vet regularly, carrying out exhaustive diagnostic tests. In addition, the appropriate preventive measures must be taken, that is, give the relevant vaccines when necessary, perform both internal and external deworming regularly, clean and monitor the eyes, ears and mouth and follow the instructions of the veterinarian. In this way, we will ensure that our Eurasian enjoys a full and happy life.
