At the southernmost point of the South American continent is Argentine Patagonia, a vast territory filled with impressive natural we alth. Flora, fauna, hybrid and energy resources, mountains and glaciers; this territory has it all.
Something very interesting about this place is that it has a fauna with its own characteristics. Majestic creatures that are only seen there. The one that stands out the most is the fauna that inhabits the coasts and the continental sea. That is where marine life takes over to decorate the landscape. However, Argentine Patagonia also has all kinds of birds and land animals.
If you want to know more about the fauna of Argentine Patagonia and its animals, we invite you to read this new article where you will discover the animal beauties of this fascinating natural region.
Southern Right Whale
During the winter season and when the spring season arrives, hundreds of whales approach a region called La Península de Valdés to mate and reproduce. The same number of tourists travel each year to Patagonia in Argentina just to witness the passage of these majestic creatures.
Something curious about these animals is that despite being so large (measuring up to 15 m in length) it can be thought that they eat enormous amounts of food in their single bite, but their diet is based on in eating plankton, which are these microscopic organisms that float in the water and that in some cases glow in the dark.
Dolphins
The species of dolphin that most enjoys swimming in these southern waters is the so-called dark or Fitzroy's dolphin, one of the of more acrobatic, gregarious and sociable dolphins. Its skin is not light gray like that of its other relatives, but rather is dark, almost black, with a bright white stripe that expands across its entire body. Although the Fitzroys love to swim in large groups, during feeding time they gather in small numbers to feed on squid, crustaceans and anchovies.
Sea Wolves
Not as visually happy as the dolphins but very interesting and strong, they are the sea lions. Mammals that love the Patagonian climate and tranquility because they can sunbathe in rocky ravines very close to the sea, and then plunge into the cold waters.
These mammals do not get cold, as they are covered by thick fur and a layer of hair. Make no mistake, although sea lions physically appear to be sedentary creatures, in fact, they are skilled swimmers: they use their front flippers to propel themselves and their back flippers to stop, and, as we mentioned at the beginning, they have indisputable strength.
Guanaco
Guanacos are Argentina's southern llamas They currently live in the Patagonian steppe, in cool, open places. They are long-legged; when walking they only support the tips of their fingers (blackish hooves with pads) like all ballet dancers. This gives them greater speed when running. Guanacos are herbivorous animals, with diurnal habits and very territorial.
Huemul
The huemul is the beautiful southern Andean deer that lives in the Andes mountain range of Argentina and Chile, especially in the Andean Patagonian forest. Unfortunately, this species with its elegant physique and adorned horns is in danger of extinction due to uncontrolled hunting. Before there were thousands of huemules in Argentine Patagonia, now there are only a few hundred left. This deer was declared in 1996 Natural Monument of Argentina
Cougar
The Argentine Puma or Puma Concolor Puma is a beautiful species as well as threatened. In addition to the Argentine Patagonia, the puma is also found in Bolivia and Paraguay. It is the southernmost subspecies. They live in several places in the Patagonian region, but their favorite home is one of the areas of greatest natural beauty, Torres del Paine National Park, which borders to the north with Los Glaciares National Park, in Argentina.
This great feline is usually found in wild and isolated areas, since it is somewhat elusive before humans, sometimes even attacking very few and with a clear objective of survival. In addition to being an intelligent and athletic animal, the cougar is capable of withstanding the most extreme and cold temperatures.
Magellanic penguins
Although penguins cannot fly, they are still considered birds. These small Sphenisciformes live on the coasts and islands of Patagonia and are really beautiful animals. They have small wings, short and hard, which serve to propel them and allow them to travel long distances. They can reach up to 45 km per hour. They are social animals that live in large colonies. We can observe them in the continental territory of Punta Tombó in the Argentine province of Chubu.
