As we know, coexistence is very important, between the same and different species. Even between the same species it is sometimes difficult in the same environment.
But what happens when we talk about the same cage? No environments to escape to when we don't get along with our neighbors. Sounds complicated, doesn't it?
On our site we are going to help you clarify these questions and be able to share spaces in harmony. We are going to face the question that generates so many doubts among us bird lovers: Can gould diamonds and canaries coexist? We'll find out…
Specific care
I don't know if it is appropriate to talk about the coexistence of the gouldian finch with the canary or the canary with exotic birds. We generally associate the canary with a cage and loneliness or coexistence with those of the same species. But, what happens if we make them live with other birds in the same aviary? Many times we consider that if they are in cages separated by species, it is correct. To my understanding, as a veterinarian and former owner of both species, this is not entirely correct.
If we have canaries in one cage and diamonds in another, but in the same environment, the effect will be almost the same. Due to proximity, the same problems can occur as in the same cage. We fear diseases that can spread from one to another or, worse, from cross-species. This does not happen since share almost the same diseases
On the other hand, if we are talking about song, or about the songs that both specimens can emit, we should know that budgerigars tend to "mute" the canaries. They are small and great to live with, but we will notice that they do not leave or start with the desired repertoire. For this reason and because they eat different seeds I do not recommend their coexistence.
Coexistence problems
The same as when we live with someone we don't like.
We can mix exotic birds with canaries as long as we observe harmony in the flight. The canary is normally a very peaceful bird, so living with other species activates it and helps it develop better. The song of the canary is very characteristic, but if we mix it with other birds that have a beautiful song, we must observe that both can develop their repertoire and not, as sometimes happens, that one subjugates the other.
We must be alert to attacks when we clean the cage and put new food and water or simply to the spaces that each one occupies. If we achieve a harmonious coexistence it is beautiful, since they will have a partner to live with.
Unsupported Species
More than a detailed list of "incompatible" birds, I will mention some and put some general characteristics that may help when choosing a partner:
That canaries can live with parakeets is already a reality. But we must try to avoid any bird that has a worse character than these psittacines and a stronger beak (lovebirds or rosellas), since these unions are never good and even less so for the Pacific Canary. We should also avoid large parakeets and parrots because even though they are good-natured the day they are in a bad mood, it could be the end of some of our canaries, even if they only try to scare them away.
Therefore, a premise that we must not forget, do not mix birds of different sizes or that do not have a soft and affectionate temperament, which will always be able to adapt to life with other similar species.
