The best way to train your puppy or adult dog to keep from dirtying the house is crate training. However, considering that you won't be able to keep an eye on your dog all the time, a combination of crate training and paper training may be the best option.
It is important that you spend a lot of time with your dog. This will help you housetrain him faster and prevent other problems like separation anxiety, destructive behaviors, barking, and even aggression.
If you continue reading, in this article on our site we are going to give you some tips for puppy hygiene education.
Cage Training
For dog crate training, you have to limit crate use of trips to the minimum possible. Remember that the travel cage should not be used to confine your dog for a long time. When you have to leave your dog alone for long periods of time, use a puppy-proofed room.
Although the Puppy-Proof Room is useful for long confinements, you only need to make use of it when you can't supervise your dog. Try to spend as much time as possible with your dog so that he doesn't feel abandoned. And also spend some time with him in his room. Keep in mind that your dog will not mess near his bed, his food bowl, or his water bowl. So don't expect his potty spot to be near those items.
Your dog is most likely to have the need to go to the bathroom when waking up, after eating, after playing and after drinking water. Make sure to take him to one of the "allowed areas" (the puppy room, the garden, the park, etc.) after he does any of those activities.
Don't punish your dog when he messes in a forbidden place. The punishments will only delay his education because he will not think that you are punishing him for making a mess somewhere, but for doing the business of him. Then he will learn to mess in hidden places (behind a couch, under a bed, etc.). When your dog makes a mess somewhere in your house, he cleans the dirt very well with a commercial product that eliminates the smell of urine. Make sure that product does not have ammonia among its ingredients because ammonia breaks down into urea, which is a component of urine.
If your dog soils his travel crate it is because you left him in it for a long time, because your puppy has a he alth problem or because he is still too young to hold on. In that case, clean the travel cage very well and prepare to re-educate it. It will take much longer, so try to avoid this problem.
Paper Training
If you use paper training, change newspapers as often as possible. At least once a day. Of course, when you start to reduce the wallpapered area you can leave some newspapers from the day before (the ones below) to maintain the smell and encourage your puppy to do in the same place.
Even if you predominantly use paper training, don't overlook active training or crate training. It is the best thing you can do to speed up your puppy's hygiene education. If you only use paper training, your dog may learn not to relieve himself outside the house. In that case, you'll have to retrain him to realize that the place where he can relieve himself isn't just a floor covered in newspapers.
Check with the vet before taking your dog out for a walk. Although the walks help in hygiene education, it is not recommended that your dog is exposed to diseases if he does not have his vaccinations
Very important
Never hit your dog with a newspaper or rub its nose against the floor. Although these procedures are very common, they only serve to scare and mistreat your dog. They simply do not serve to educate any animal. Instead, use positive reinforcement and follow these puppy grooming tips
