Dogs are very social animals and greatly enjoy being able to go for walks and explore a natural environment. But we must take precautions so that our best friend does not suffer scratches in his exploration attempt.
Sometimes when we get home after a long walk we can notice a small and superficial wound, such as a small cut or a scratch, this is not serious if we take care of it properly from home.
For this care to be carried out correctly, in this AnimalWised article, we show you how to make a natural disinfectant for dog wounds.
Difference between disinfectant and antiseptic
The term disinfectant, widely used to refer to the he alth of living beings, is medically incorrect, since a disinfectant is a substance that eliminates germs from a inert surface, in this sense, sodium hypochlorite or bleach would be a type of disinfectant.
In contrast, when a substance with a similar activity is used on living tissue, it is called an antiseptic.
An antiseptic acts on the outer layers of the skin and prevents pathogenic organisms from entering the wound and causing infection
In this sense, antiseptic treatment is essential for the skin to recover adequately from a wound and not experience the typical complication that can arise from a bacterial infection.
How to make a natural antiseptic for dog wounds
You will need the following ingredients:
- 100 milliliters of rosehip oil
- 20 drops of tea tree essential oil
- 20 drops lavender essential oil
These components are useful for treating dog wounds as they have the following properties:
- Rosehip oil: It is used as the base of the preparation and has properties to keep the skin moisturized and well nourished.
- Tea tree essential oil: In the veterinary field it is widely known for its deworming properties, however, it is also antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial.
- Lavender essential oil: Lavender is a very mild essential oil but with important antibacterial properties that make it very useful in the treatment of canine wounds.
To prepare it, you must have a opaque glass jar to preserve the mixture well. Simply add the rosehip oil first and then the drops of essential oils.
How to use
To treat any wound it is essential that before applying an antiseptic proper hygiene is carried out To do this you must clean the affected area gently, using warm water and neutral soap suitable for veterinary use. Hygiene should always be done before applying the antiseptic, it is recommended that it be 2 to 3 times a day.
Regarding the natural antiseptic that we have shown you, you should know that essential oils are very concentrated, therefore, you will not need a large amount. Each time you perform the cure you must use 5 drops.
You can apply them directly through a dropper or if it is more comfortable for you and your dog, through a spray bottle.
Other tips
As we mentioned at the beginning, this antiseptic is designed to treat superficial wounds, obviously for serious injuries urgent veterinary care will be essential.
In the case of minor injuries, if we want to carry out a more complete natural treatment, we can also use aloe vera juice, since it has multiple ideal properties to accelerate the process of skin repair and healing.
It is important that you pay attention to the evolution of the wound, if it does not improve in a couple of days, it is recommended that you go to the vet to assess a topical pharmacological treatment.
