The Yorkshire terrier is a small breed of dog, characterized by its attractive appearance, whose combination of colors, face shape and particular coat have made these dogs companionsvery popular.
Just like you do with your hair, your Yorkshire terrier's coat needs a lot of care, from brushing, bathing with shampoo and conditioner to removing knots or detecting possible parasites, dandruff, among others. That is why we present you this article on Yorkshire terrier hair care
Weekly brushing
Yorkshire hair is characterized by being smooth and silky, an appearance that is contributed by the natural fat that its coat usually possesses. Being a long-haired breed, caring for it will depend not only on bathing, but also on correct brushing, which allows to remove all dead hair, undo knots and distribute natural fat throughout the body.
It is recommended to get your Yorkshire terrier used to being brushed from an early age, and repeat the following routine 2 to 3 times a week Never You should try to brush on completely dry fur, so you have two options: if his coat is dry, spray on a dog conditioner; if, on the other hand, it is greasy, moisten it with a little water, which you will spread with your hand, is more than enough.
Before brushing, run your fingers through your dog's fur to feel for knots. They usually form around the ears, between the legs and in the armpits. If you find any, try to undo it without pulling on the strands. If impossible, cut the section very carefully.
Use a metal comb with fine teeth for brushing, be careful not to touch the Yorkshire's skin with it. Always brush in the direction the fur grows. Use a smaller comb for the area around the ears, around the eyes, and around the nose.
If you notice faeces attached around the tail, it is best to cut the tuft. Prevent eye injuries by gathering the sections that fall over the eyes into a cute bow or bow.
Monthly Bath
It is best to bathe your yorkshire once every month, unless, of course, it has gotten dirt or anything else similar and requires a shower first.
You can bathe him in a punch bowl on the floor, in the sink, or even on a grooming table. In the last two cases we recommend you to be very careful, because the dog could be frightened by something and try to jump, with the consequences that this would imply.
The bath begins after having brushed the coat correctly. Place two cotton balls inside the ears to prevent water from falling on them, and start by wetting the head with your hand, without letting water fall into the eyes or nose. Then wet the back and the rest of the body. Do all this with warm water and using gentle movements.
Take a little shampoo in the palms of your hands and rub until foamy. You should never use a human shampoo, only a dog shampoo. When the foam has formed, apply with circular movements over the entire body of your Yorkshire, being very careful not to get product in the eyes. If this happens, rinse with water immediately.
Leave the shampoo on for two minutes and then rinse thoroughly, gently rubbing all areas of the body until the water comes out completely clean. If desired, you can apply conditioner after shampooing. Follow the same procedure, leave for 5 minutes and remove with water. With this, your Yorkshire terrier's coat will be clean and silky.
Dry and brush after bath
After a good bath, it is necessary to dry the dog's coat very well. For that, at first it is recommended that you let it shake on its own, as it will expel a large part of the water. After that, it's your turn. Press a towel all over the animal's body to absorb as much moisture as possible, avoid rubbing so as not to tangle the hair
If you prefer, you can also use a hair dryer, always on the lowest setting and at least 20 centimeters away from the dog, taking care not to leave it for a long time in each area so as not to burn the hair or the skin. If you don't feel confident about blow drying, a towel will suffice. After drying all the hair, brush the Yorkshire in the way that we explained above.
Cut the hair of the Yorkshire terrier
At least two or three times a year, it is recommended that you have your Yorkshire terrier's hair cut by a professional. In addition to this, at home you can make some maintenance cuts if you cannot afford dog grooming very often. There are 10 types of cuts for Yorkshire, choose the one that best suits your style.
Use a small blunt-tipped scissors, both to avoid hurting your Yorkshire and to prevent you from cutting the hair improperly. One of the places you can safely cut at home is under the legs, where excess hair could make this little breed slippery when walking.
To trim the hair under the legs, just hold one at a time firmly and cut off the excess. You can also match the hair that grows under the chin, so the Yorkshire doesn't chew it when eating; do the same with the fringe on the head, so it doesn't bend over the eyes, and around the anus.
The hair around the ears, as well as the inner strands, should also be trimmed from time to time, when you consider it necessary. Similarly, remember that a good diet, with quality feed, and adequate hydration are crucial elements to keep your Yorkshire terrier's hair beautiful and he althy.
