Among the basic care that dogs should receive regularly are both internal and external deworming. There are several products that our veterinarian can recommend for this purpose. Among all of them, Milpro for dogs stands out as one of the most complete options to keep our dog free, in this case, from internal parasites

In this article on our site we explain what this product consists of, what species it is used against and how we have to give it to our dog.

What is Milpro for dogs?

Milpro for dogs is the name given to a product internal antiparasitic that comes in tablets. These are oval or round in shape, film-coated, and light brown in color. In addition, they have a meat flavor that can make it much easier to administer to the dog.

Its active ingredients are milbemycin oxime and praziquantel. Both, broadly speaking, are responsible for interfering with the nervous system of the parasites, causing paralysis and, consequently, death.

What is Milpro for dogs for?

As it is an internal dewormer, its use is clear, that is, its function is to eliminate the parasites that are present at that moment. are present in the dog's body, especially in the gastrointestinal system, but it is also useful for an eye parasite on the rise, such as thelazia, or for the prevention of the so-called heartworm. Being more technical, Milpro treats parasitic infestations caused by adult forms of cestodes, which are flatworms, and nematodes, which are roundworms. Specifically, it is active versus:

  • Dipylidium caninum.
  • Taenia spp.
  • Echinococcus spp.
  • Mesocestoides spp.
  • Ancylostoma caninum.
  • Toxocara canis.
  • Toxascaris leonina.
  • Trichuris vulpes.
  • Thelazia callipaeda.
  • In Crenosoma vulpis and Angiostrongylus vasorum Milpro manages to reduce the level of infestation.
  • In certain cases, it is used to prevent Dirofilaria immitis.

As we can see, it has a wide spectrum of action, which is why it forms part of the products selected for regular canine deworming. Even so, if we suspect that our dog has parasites, the ideal is that, before giving him any product, the veterinarian should check him to identify the parasite. In this way you can know if Milpro is or is not the most appropriate treatment.

Milpro Dosage for Dogs

The correct dose of Milpro depends on the weight of each dog, hence the importance of the accuracy of this data. I mean, you have to weigh it. It is important to know that Milpro is sold in two formats, which are:

  • 2, 5 mg milbemycin oxime/25 mg praziquantel, formulated for puppies and small dogs.
  • 12, 5 mg milbemycin oxime/125 mg praziquantel, for medium to large adult dogs.

You can divide the tablets into several parts. The minimum recommended dose is 0.5 mg of milbemycin oxime and 5 mg of praziquantel for each kg of weight and administered in a single dose. In other words, and speaking of tablets, the Milpro is dosed as follows:

  • The one formulated for puppies and small dogs: half a tablet for dogs weighing from half a kg to one kg, one whole tablet for 1-5 kg and two for those weighing between 5-10 kg.
  • The Milpro for large dogs: in this case, it is offered at the rate of one tablet for dogs weighing 5-25 kg, two for those between 25-50 and three for those between 50 and 75 kg.

When and how often to use Milpro for dogs?

It is recommended to offer Milpro with food or after eating, since, due to its meaty taste, dogs usually accept them alone without any problem. In general, it is recommended to deworm dogs every 3-4 months preventively, but it is an aspect that the veterinarian must decide based on the risk of parasitization in where our dog is. For example, the frequency of use can be increased in puppies, since, after two weeks of life, internal deworming is recommended every 15-30 days until the primary vaccination is completed.

You must bear in mind that all the animals that live in the home must be dewormed at the same time. On the other hand, for the treatment of thelazia, Angiostrongylus or dirofilaria it is necessary to follow the veterinarian's guidelines, since these are cases with their own peculiarities.

Contraindications of Milpro for dogs

We insist on the importance of the veterinarian choosing the most appropriate deworming treatment for our dog according to his circumstances. This way we will avoid scares, since Milpro is not indicated for all dogs For example, Milpro for puppies and small dogs should not be used in puppies less than two weeks old of life or weighing less than 500 grams. For its part, the Milpro for larger dogs should not be given to those weighing less than 5 kg.

Of course, it could not be given to a dog that has presented an allergic reaction to the active substances of Milpro or we suspect that it may be allergic to any of them. Neither for those with microfilariae nor are there studies on its safety in dogs with liver or kidney problems, severe weakness, pregnancy or lactation. In addition, care must be taken with collie-type breeds and their crosses, as they have a lower tolerance to milbemycin. Hence the importance of the dose being established by the veterinarian.

Side effects of Milpro for dogs

In addition to contraindications, be aware of possible adverse effects of Milpro, although they are rare. We highlight the following:

  • Lethargy.
  • Muscle tremors.
  • Incoordination.
  • Seizures.
  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Anorexy.
  • Hypersalivation.

If you detect any of these signs, discover any other negative effect or believe that the Milpro has not been effective, you must contact the veterinarianOn the other hand, dogs with high numbers of circulating microfilariae may experience hypersensitivity reactions with paleness, vomiting, tremors, breathing problems or hypersalivation. It is a toxicity caused by the dying microfilariae and not an effect of the drug itself.
